"Firewood ships"
"Firewood ships" were typical cargo schooners of Hiiumaa sailors in the 2nd half of 19th century-1st half of 20. century.![](gfx/laev-200.jpg)
Small, two-masted sailship, built by the local carpenters straight on the coast, local men in crew made cargo sailings in the Baltic Sea. Rigg type: schooner. Main cargo for Hiiumaa schooners were firewood to big cities: Tallinn, Riga, therefore ships had the nickname "firewood ships".

No drawings were made, shipbuilding master introduced his ideas about the future vessel making a wooden half-model of the hull of the ship.
Most famous places of shipbuilding on Hiiumaa were harbour Suursadam, coasts of Emmaste and Kõpu.

The "dynasties" of shipbuilders and shipowners were:
Koolmeister, Teng, Jaago, Sergo.

Halulaev is a modern replica of the traditional "firewood schooner".
